About the Role
Location: Aylesford, Kent (with occasional travel to customer sites)
Rate: Up to £25.00 per hour (dependent on experience)
Hours: Up to 48 hours per week
Contract Type: Self-Employed Contractor (Outside IR35)
We are seeking an experienced and reliable Plant Engineer to support the maintenance, repair and servicing of a diverse range of plant and machinery. This is a self-employed contract opportunity, operating outside of IR35, offering up to 48 hours of work per week, possibly leading to an employment opportunity.
The successful contractor will be predominantly based in Aylesford, Kent, with occasional travel required to customer or operational sites. You will play a key role in ensuring equipment remains safe, compliant and operational, helping to minimise downtime and maintain high service standards.
Key Responsibilities

- Carry out routine servicing, maintenance and repairs on plant machinery and associated equipment.
- Diagnose faults and undertake effective mechanical repairs.
- Conduct inspections and preventative maintenance activities.
- Complete welding and fabrication work as required.
- Identify and rectify defects in a timely manner.
- Ensure all work is completed safely and in accordance with relevant regulations and industry standards.
- Maintain accurate records of work completed and parts used.
- Support breakdown response activities when required.
- Liaise with management regarding repair requirements, parts and equipment availability.
- Travel to external sites as necessary to undertake maintenance and repair work.
- Essential Skills and Experience
- Proven experience working as a Plant Engineer, Plant Fitter, HGV Technician, Agricultural Engineer or similar mechanical role.
- Strong diagnostic and fault-finding abilities.
- Demonstrable welding and fabrication experience.
- Good understanding of hydraulic, mechanical and electrical systems.
- Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively.
- Strong health and safety awareness.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
- Contractor Requirements
Essential Skills and Experience
- As this is a self-employed contractor, applicants must:
- Be registered as self-employed or operate through a limited company.
- Provide their own standard tools and equipment.
- Provide and maintain their own PPE suitable for the duties required.
- Hold appropriate Public Liability Insurance.
- Be responsible for their own tax and National Insurance obligations.
- Supply evidence of relevant qualifications, certifications and insurance upon request.
- Desirable Experience
- Experience working with construction plant, agricultural machinery or heavy equipment.
- Relevant engineering or mechanical qualifications.
- Experience undertaking mobile plant repairs.
- Knowledge of hydraulic systems and fabrication techniques.
